Uniform Moment Magnitude Earthquake Catalog and Background Seismicity Rates

In 2016, the Working Group on Utah Earthquake Probabilities (WGUEP) published probabilistic earthquake forecasts for the Wasatch Front region. In their report, Earthquake Probabilities for the Wasatch Front Region in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, they present the probabilities of a magnitude 6 or greater and a magnitude 6.75 or greater earthquake occurring in the next 50 years on the Wasatch fault and other prominent faults in the Wasatch Front region. In support of this effort, a uniform moment magnitude catalog was produced by UUSS scientists, and is presented in Appendix E of the report.

This appendix to the report by the WGUEP (2016) describes full details of the construction and analysis of a refined earthquake catalog and the calculation of seismicity rates for the Wasatch Front and surrounding Utah region. The earthquake catalog covers the period from 1850 through September 2012 for the catalog region extending from lat. 36.75° to 42.50° N and from long. 108.75° to 114.25° W. A uniform moment magnitude, M (and quantified magnitude uncertainty), is determined for each earthquake in the catalog of 5,388 clustered earthquakes and 2,425 declustered earthquakes. The final uniform moment magnitude catalog is presented as supplement E-1.
